The Kissimmee City Commission approved the acceptance of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) funding for the construction of Taxiway Alpha Improvements, a $21.1 million project that will modernize one of the airport's most important airfield corridors.

Federal funds will cover 95% of the project. The City also anticipates a 4% contribution from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), which is expected to be provided at a later date. The airport's share is 1%. The result is a substantial upgrade with minimal local investment.

Planned Improvements

The Taxiway Alpha project was identified through the airport's Capital Improvement Plan and will include:

  • Pavement rehabilitation. Taxiway Alpha will be rebuilt to restore pavement condition and extend its useful life.

  • Modern LED lighting. New LED edge lights and directional signs will improve visibility, efficiency, and safety for pilots operating day and night.

  • FAA-standard alignment. The taxiway pavement will be shifted 50 feet east to meet FAA standards for the larger aircraft now using the airport.

Kissimmee Gateway Airport's growing use by larger aircraft is what makes this project necessary. Airport staff identified the need to rehabilitate Taxiway Alpha proactively, before the pavement deteriorated further.

"Kissimmee Gateway Airport continues to grow as a gateway to Central Florida, and our airfield has to keep pace,” said Shaun J. Germolus, the City's Director of Aviation. "We appreciate the FAA partnership and confidence in this project, which will deliver a safer, more modern taxiway for our users."

Federal Partnership

The City also thanks Congressman Darren Soto, who represents Kissimmee in the U.S. House of Representatives, for his continued support of federal investment in Central Florida's infrastructure. Kissimmee Gateway Airport supports general aviation, corporate travel, and economic activity throughout Osceola County and the region. Investments like this one help ensure the airport remains a safe, reliable, and attractive option for pilots and businesses. Construction timing will be announced as final contracts and procurement of materials are obtained.
